Brushing Teeth
Nothing cleans your mouth and freshens your breath as well as brushing your teeth. It’s part of our daily routine. But are you getting the most out of your brushing? Most people don’t brush long enough or thoroughly enough to keep their teeth and gums at their healthiest.
Here are some tips for getting the maximum benefit out of your brushing.
Toothbrush
The type of brush you use is important. Use one with soft bristles that effectively removes plaque without damaging your gums. If the bristles are too hard, they could damage your gums and the enamel on your teeth. (Depending on your needs, we may recommend an extra soft toothbrush.) Consider using a toothpaste that contains fluoride to help protect tooth enamel and prevent decay. Toothpaste that is marked with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance must contain fluoride. If you have questions or concerns about using toothpaste with fluoride, talk to us.
Technique
Make sure the brush reaches your back teeth. A brush that has an angle could help. Pay special attention to your wisdom teeth if you still have them. Those teeth can be difficult to clean. Teach your children proper toothbrushing technique and the importance of reaching all of your teeth surfaces.
Frequency and duration
Brush at least twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. Brushing helps you remove food and plaque from your teeth. Plaque is a sticky white film that forms on your teeth and contains bacteria that can attack tooth enamel. If left unchecked, cavities can form. Plaque can also harden into tartar, making it harder to keep teeth clean and healthy. Brushing also helps reduce tartar buildup on your gums, which can lead to inflammation and ultimately gum disease.
There you have it. Keep those pearly whites bright, your breath fresh, and keep on smiling.
